You're keynoting at the dinner meeting of your company's Regional Managers. The goals for the year ahead are daunting and you want to encourage these Regional Managers to rally their local employees around every effort to meet the goals.
The widely dispersed locations of your employees means that your 'message from the CEO' will be transmitted from the Regional Managers to the District Managers and then to the employees. How do you ensure that the employees hear the right message?
This is an exceptional opportunity to send a memorable and crystal clear message through the use of a story called the "Transmitting Values" story.
The Transmitting Values story reflects two kinds of values:
- Ethical Values: trust, loyalty, solidarity
- Instrumental values: values that are instrumental to the success of the busienss and will not be sacrificed for short term gains
Examples of Instrumental values include:
- Paying a living wage commensurate with productivity, rather than paying the lowest wage possible just to boost the next quarter's earnings.
- Helping your suppliers make their own revnue and profit targets by negotiating prices and terms that are favorble to both sides
- Being committed to exanding the pie rather than getting a larger share of the existing pie
